Knife Sharpening Huddersfield

Traditional In-Store Knife Sharpening Since 1865

For over 150 years, C Booth & Son has been part of Huddersfield's ironmongery and cutlery trade. Founded in 1865 by Charles Booth, originally a Sheffield saw maker, blade care has always been at the heart of what we do.

Today, five generations later, we continue to provide professional knife sharpening from our shop in Huddersfield town centre, West Yorkshire. Whether your kitchen knife has become blunt through daily use or needs repairing after damage, we restore blades to their optimum sharpness using traditional equipment and specialist knowledge.

No appointment is required for domestic customers — simply bring your knives into the shop during opening hours and we will take care of the rest. Trade customers requiring larger quantities are encouraged to call ahead.

If your knives are beyond repair or you are considering an upgrade, you can also browse our carefully selected range of kitchen knives, chosen for quality, performance and longevity.

Knife Sharpening Prices & Repairs

Repair & Reshaping Service

In addition to routine sharpening, we also carry out blade repairs.

Over time, knives can become damaged through heavy use, including:

  • Broken or snapped tips

  • Chips in the cutting edge

  • Deep indentations caused by cutting through bone

  • Uneven blade wear

Where possible, we can reshape and restore the blade profile, removing damaged sections and returning the knife to a usable, sharp condition.

The extent of the repair work required will determine the final price, and this will always be discussed with you in advance.

Pricing Structure

Sharpening starts from:

£2.50 per knife

£4.00 per Japanese knife

The final price depends on the size of the blade and the amount of work required. Every knife is inspected on arrival, and the cost is confirmed with you before we begin.

There is no minimum charge beyond the starting per-knife price.

Japanese Knives

Japanese knives often require a different sharpening approach due to their harder steel and finer edge geometry. For this reason, sharpening starts from £4.00 per knife, with final pricing agreed on inspection.

Established 1865 – A Heritage of Steel & Service

C Booth & Son was founded in 1865 by Charles Booth, originally a Sheffield saw maker who brought his trade to Huddersfield. As ironmongers and cutlers, working with steel has always been part of our history.

Now five generations later, we continue to sharpen knives in our Huddersfield town centre shop using traditional equipment and methods passed down over decades.

Our sharpening grinder is built directly into the premises and powered by a motor manufactured by Brook Motors of Huddersfield — a piece of local engineering heritage that still serves the business today.

In a world of postal sharpening services and disposable kitchenware, we remain committed to careful workmanship, honest advice, and service rooted in experience.

When Should You Sharpen Your Kitchen Knife?

Why Regular Sharpening Matters

Regular sharpening:

  • Extends the life of your knife

  • Maintains clean, controlled cuts

  • Reduces strain on your wrist

  • Improves kitchen safety

A blunt knife often requires more force, increasing the risk of slipping.

Many people continue using blunt knives for far longer than they should. A properly sharpened knife is not only easier to use — it is safer and more precise.

As a general guide, most home cooks benefit from sharpening their kitchen knives every 6–12 months, depending on how often they are used.

Professional chefs and heavy users may require more frequent sharpening.

Signs Your Knife Needs Sharpening

You may notice:

  • The blade crushes tomatoes instead of slicing cleanly

  • You need to apply excessive pressure when chopping

  • The knife slips when cutting onions or peppers

  • The edge appears uneven or chipped

  • Food sticks more than usual

If you experience any of the above, it is likely time to have the knife professionally sharpened. Please note, Knives that go through a dishwasher often suffer from wear and tear quicker.

Knife Sharpening for Chefs & Trade Customers

In addition to domestic sharpening, we regularly work with professional chefs, catering businesses, butchers and hospitality venues across Huddersfield and West Yorkshire.

Trade customers may bring in multiple knives at once — often 10 to 20 blades at a time. If you require knives returned by a specific date, we recommend calling ahead to arrange scheduling.

We understand that for professionals, sharp knives are not a luxury but a necessity. Our aim is to provide reliable turnaround times and consistent sharpening standards you can depend on.
